Bilingual Program

This is an opportunity for non-Chinese speaking families to learn Chinese using the pinyin phonetic system.  Parents can learn Chinese as well so they can help their student practice at home.  Parents are allowed to sit in class to observe the lessons.  During the 2007-2008 school year, we are offering four bilingual classes (B1 – B4).

The bilingual curriculum is composed of two series of textbooks.  Both are published by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission. The first series is Children’s Chinese Reader and the second series is Living Mandarin

The Children's Chinese Reader textbooks can be divided into Kindergarten and Grade School level books.  The kindergarten level has 4 volumes with 12 lessons in each volume.  The grade school level has 12 volumes.  See links to these textbooks under the Library section of the website.  These textbooks are available on the web with sound.  It is a great resource for parents who do not have Chinese language systems on their computers.

The grade school level classes will also be using Living Mandarin as their primary textbook. Each level and volume comes with a CD with music that helps the students learn Chinese through song and rhythm.  Each level also has accompanying software called E-Pen.  We have found that this makes learning Chinese for children fun and more accessible, by fostering a Chinese learning environment at home.

Depending on the experience and average student age of our classes, the following textbooks can be expected to be completed during this year's 30-week school year:
